The beautiful pieces of prose that follow offer comfort as we prepare to give our beloved animal companions one last gift--ending their suffering and helping them to pass from our world to the next with peace, dignity, and our blessing.
Where to Bury a Dog
The question is this:  “Where shall I bury my dog?”  It is asked in advance of death and surely such a question merits a reply, since the one who asked it loves the dog . . .

. . . Although my tail its last has waved,

from pain and suffering, I’ve been saved.

Please do not grieve—it must be you

who had this painful thing to do.

We’ve been so close,

we two these years,

don’t let your heart hold back its tears.

Thank you so for loving me.  You know I love you, too.

That’s why it’s hard to say goodbye and end this life with you.

Please hold me now, just one more time, and let me hear you say,

Because you care so much for me, you’ll let me go today.

A Dog’s Plea

Please see that my trusting life is taken gently.

I shall leave this earth

knowing with the last breath I draw

that my fate was always best and safest

in your loving hands.
